Metal detectors should be used daily in schools

Gun usage in the schools are starting to become a major concern. There has been an increase in school violence and the people in the community are starting to worry about their kids safety. Everyday more and more weapons have been found in schools and the safey of our children has been put in jeopardy. The majority of the schools in the United States do not use metal detectors on a daily basis. There hasn't been a proven number of schools using metal detectors, but the use of etal detectors on a daily basis has been limited to large urban schools with a history of weapon related issues. Using metal detectors on a day to day basis in schools are not mandatory but an option. So the question that still remains, are metal detectors in school necessary and should all school use metal detectors to improve school safety. Parents the media and other caring citizen are starting to have concerns aouth the safety of their children while they are at school. Most schools don't even consider the use of metal detectors until after high-profile incidents of school violence, such as school shootings or stabbing occur. What happened to prevention and the safety of our kids while they are at school? Why should a parent, sibling, or friend loose a love one before schools take the necessary precaution to protect their students. Its understandable that parents want some type of assurance that when they send their children to school their children will be safe. The fact that the school is using metal detector will some what put their minds at ease. The understand that metal detectors will not stop school violence a 100% but the metal detectors will help reduce some of the violence. Children most often spend the majority of their day at school. They not only come to school to learn but they also spend time wth their friends and to socialize. If students as well as the staff members don't feel safe at school, their education will also suffer. School should be considered a safety nest for our children and they shouldn't have to worry about life and death while they are at schhol. Metal detectors can really be effective in preventing some of the school violence that's happenening today. These devices helps to reduce the amount of knives and firearms that kids are bringing into the school building. In a study it was proven that students who attended a school that used metal detectors daily were half as likely to carry a gun, knife, or any other weapon to school as students who attended schools without metal detectors. Metal detectors can be a very valuable item to use inschools to help reduce the school violence. School violence has taken over the school and its up to the community to step up and do what's most important, make our children's safety our number one priority.

  1. I completely agree with you on this topic. It is very important that each school consider placing metal detectors in all entrances and considering using hand held ones at all times. With both of my parents being in administration, this topic is brought up a lot in my family. They do feel that it is very important for the safety of not only the children but everyone in the school.

  2. I am up in the air on this issue. I do have two children in public school and their safety is one of my top concerns. I guess it just saddens me that we are in a day and age where this is even an issue. But it's not an inner city issue, or a racial issue or low income issue. Proven by Columbine and Jonesboro, no school is immune from gun violence. I do think that metal detectors are a deterrent. Maybe not to all who might think of bringing a weapon to school but I am sure it stops some of it and anything that adds another layer of protection is something I am definately going to consider as a good idea.

  3. I am very much in favor of those metal detectors in the school system. My daughter thinks they are a just something to make her late for class. Unfortunately the schools that use them only have one and it is not fisable to scan every child so only about 1/4 of the students are put through the scanner a day.

  4. This is a great subject! I am not against metal detectors, however I do work in a school and know this is a job for someone but not administrators. Think about it, a school with over 1100 students this would take a long time to do. Do you suggest that school begin earlier to get this done on a daily basis. One good thing would come out of it is a new job for some people. On the outside looking in it seems simple but this would be very expensive and time consuming. Again I am not against it I'm just not sure if I have the answer of how to make it happen effectively.

  5. I am a huge fan of metal detectors in any scenario. Schools in particular should have them lining every door that is an entrance or exit to the building. Is it expensive? Sure but how much is your child's safety worth? If it would make sure that children are safe then spend the money.

  6. I agree that metal detectors in schools would decrease the amount of weapons in the school, but if a person wants to be violent then they will either wait outside or just come through the metal detectors. I do think that in schools with a high number of weapons found should look more closely at metal detectors.

  7. I am in the middle on this subject as well. Although I agree that the crime rate in schools have gone up and parents and administrators need to reach a solution, it is just sad that American society has to this. The youth of our nation has grown up surrounded by violence ie video games, television, and even the nightly news, and it does not even phase them to solve problems through rage at school with weapons. Our communities never need to relive the tragedies of our past, but has it really come that far that we need metal detectors in all our schools? It seems like we our sending our youth off to prison each day, but what else can we do to protect our children?

  8. I do think metal detectors should be used in schools, all secondary schools especially. It is there where majority of the problems lies. There are so many issues that children have to face in their day to day lives that it almost becomes frightning. My niece is in high school and although we live in a fairly nice part of town, they still have metal detectors. I do think it is appropriate. If it is not the student who is trying to prove a point or the student is tired of getting bullied; they are Americas' students and all deserve protection even from themselves. Life is precious and children are worth protecting by any means necessary. Metal detectors serve as part of prevention in my opinion. Not only guns but knives as well do not belong in the same campus or home without a purpose or in a safe place.

  9. I guess it's easy for me to say that I'm not opposed to more safety precautions in the schools. It's a different day that when I was in elementary and secondary school. I believe if parents would talk more to their children and have a more active role in raising them and teaching them values of life, there would be less of craziness in our world that is currently going on. There can never be too many precautions in life. Is it inconvenient? Sure, maybe to some...is it worth it to prevent "one" accident...yes! Some laws of our country are just ridiculous. In the case of the little boy bringing a gun to school as a "show and tell" and then being kicked out of that school forever, what is up with that? "Talk" to the child and state what is wrong about it and why it was a wrong idea. Is it possible that the expense this child is possibly going to have to live with the rest of his life of doing something so horrible, how is that going affect his life? Sure, there will be expenses and training and all that that school management is going to have to address, but it can be done and done right.

  10. I completely agree with you on this topic. Metal dectectors have assumed a great importance due to the rising violence of school. We as parents would like to know how safe are the metal detectors. Ialso believe that metal detectors alone can not protect our children when violence strikes on the school grounds or while the children are boarding their buses. I have grandchildren that are still in school, and I would like to know that they are safe
