Baggy Pants
To the Editor,
With the high stigmatism of males wearing bagging pants, I would like to see Memphis induce a law to prohibit males from wearing their pants below their buttocks, also termed baggy pants or saggy trousers.
The first reason I would like to see this is because there are so many opinions and stereotypes. This ultimately leads to however I don’t believe wearing pants in this fashion should make them cold criminals. I believe just attempting to ban baggy pants will cause people to think about the issue in their areas. To me wearing sagging trousers is lack of respect to society and mainly women. There was a TV show in the past named Family Matters. There was a comical character in the sitcom named Earkle whom was known to wear his pants above the navel area. I definitely don’t believe that’s necessary at all. l.I do realize the city has other issuers more important as criminal activity, but just starting to face the baggy trousers issue should be faced. According to USA Today at least 20 cities has passed a law against wearing baggy pants. Other cities have tried to ban baggy pants but were rejected. This is due to the First Amendment protecting the wearing of clothing as a freedom of expression. The First Amendment protects you on how you dress. It’s an American Civil Right. Some cities experience The First Amendment as being a hard Amendment to face. However, most cities which the laws have passed this fashion have a local policy including public indecent which covers how a person expose their body in public. Some cities ban baggy pants while relating it to gay, crimes, and gangs. I do not believe its always related to crime or gang.. Again, to me it’s lack of respect and public indencit. Law makers also relate saggy pants directly or indirectly to poor learning and delinquency. This is not my belief. I’ve read different article regarding how wearing pants as such started. One article namely “Pants Hang Low” based on an album being released. This article states bagging pants begin in prison. Its written oversized uniforms were issued without belts to prevent suicide and use of weapons. The style quickly spreaded to all nationalities. Now bagging pants are seen on a regular basis.
I believe that one of the most effective ways to reduce bagging in schools was to induce the uniform policy. In the begging of the uniform policy, both students and some parents rebuked the policy. Since the uniform policy has been in effect, the number of children you see now wearing baggy pants has reduced significantly. We can not force all persons to wear uniforms, but at least it is a start in our schools. Uniforms seem to not only reduce the steriotypes of people that wear baggy pants in school, it has also cut down the number of school conflicts because people are not preoccupied with what their classmates are wearing. The stereotypes associated with baggy pants are far from positive. Although we shouldn’t stereotype people for any reason, it is very much a part of our culture. Inducing a law to prevent people from wearing baggy pants, in public will improve the world as a whole and bring the stereotype of a real gentleman back into the picture.
Some people simply don’t know, as wrong as it may be, we are at times looked upon according to fashion. Some don’t know how important appearance can affect jobs and colleges. Some forget about the importance of how appearance effect the next generation. Like many other cities, it’s time for Memphis to ban saggy pants.

I agree with you on banning baggy pants. Personally, I do not want to see guys underwear hanging out of their pants. They are called "under"wear for a reason to go UNDER your clothes. Wearing baggy pants, would be like girls walking around with their underwear hanging out. When I drive down the street and see guys running and trying to hold on to their pants at the same time, I cannot help, but laugh and wonder why in the world do they not think it would just be easier to wear a belt or pants that fit.
ReplyDeleteWhile this blog does address the issue of baggy pants, and uniforms, The only issue with setting policy/ laws/ legislation relating to the wearing of clothes is the issue of enforcing such a policy. When the uniform policy was initiated, the first few years went great, Policy is only as effective as the persons enforcing it. What we see now in the policy is many parents who will buy their children pants that are 2 sizes too big; this is not right, some parents are encouraging it.
ReplyDeleteIf in fact Memphis does pass a law permitting pants to not sag, what is the punishment for those caught in the act? A fine? jailed? a warning?
While I agree that something needs to be done, first is re-educating those who are sagging.. second is ensuring that policy is made that is enforceable.

Love this blog. Whenever I see a guy wearing his pants saggy, I either want to laugh, or wish he would pull his pants up. There's improvement on this issue. I've seen more saggy pants wearing in high school than the university. Guess its higher education.

I totally agree with you on the baggy pants policy, uniforms in the school was a start for the youth, but what about the adults because that's where it started. I also heard that the baggy pants started in prison but not because of the oversized clothing. I heard it was for the ones that were considered an inmates "partner". If only people knew what things meant before they did them would make this world a better place.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with up on making a law to ban people from wearing baggy pants in a university. I think you have a great clam for students in high school, middle school, and elementary, but not in college. It’s hard to stereotype someone just because they like to wear their pants down low. Its reason why people sag maybe they like the look or they feel it’s comfortable for them. I understand that some people don’t like looking at young males wearing their pants down low, but the truth is we are all adults and because of that we all have other personal choice and what we want to wear and how we want to wear it. If they were to make that law true then lawmakers well have to prohibit women from showing cleavage.

I agree that some people do go over board with the bagging but I like to where my pants somewhat loose, just think about the most comfortable outfit you have whether it be your pjs, workout clothes, etc. are the tight on you or loose fitting. Now i make sure my underwear is not showing, it is a fashion choice for me it doesn't reflect on me as a student or anything else I have an B average, work part-time at a bank and come to class everyday, i just like to be comfortable and I feel that this my right. Just like older people who wear short shorts I have seen men and women wear them sometimes more is exposed from these than from baggy pants but were is the ban on these, I dont like turtle necks but I would never ban anyone who likes them from wearing them because it is their right to wear whatever they want.
ReplyDeleteI agree that baggy pants should be stopped but I do not believe there should be a law on it. I believe that in schools uniforms are a good way to reduce this problem, but when I was in high school I would have hated them.I do not want to see guys boxers hanging out they should just pull them up out of respect. People who do this also make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good blog, I hate to see young men wearing baggy pants too! When I was in school, I had a teacher that would make the guys who were sagging pull there pants up, and tie a shoestring in there belt loops. I remind my little brother and cousins all the time that they should not sag, especially while in the presence of women. All of them are very intelligent and nice young men, but I'm sure that when others see them they quickly associate them with "thugs" and gang members, which is definitely not the case. While many of us may not like baggy pants, no one can stop someone from dressing how they want, they have the right to; wearing baggy pants is not a crime.
ReplyDeleteThis is all i have to say about that:

Baggy pants should be band I do not understand why the fellows want to go around with their butts showing or their underwear. When I see young men with their pants hanging I will ask them to pull them up and then I ask the question of why do you allow your pants to sag. When they give me their answer and it doesn't make sense to me I tell them about how the sagging of the pants was formed. Some of them already know and they say it doesn't matter to them that men who are inpriosned came up with this tacky mess. This was so that they would know which man belonged to who or if the they were gay. I think that they should pay a find when they are got with their pants down. The fine should be anywhere from $150.00 to $300.oo dollars. This might seem crazy but I get tried of looking at our young men degrade themselves. Masybe paying a fine will help.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this blog, but i also have to say that most people that sage between the ages of 14 and 21. me being someone that use to were baggy and saggy pants can say that its mostly a phase.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that yound African-American boys don't even know where saggy pants originated from. Most of them wear it because the next person is doing it. They cause themselves to be stereotyped by everyone. I think that if you choose to wear your clothing in that manner then everyone should treat you just the way that you look. I hate when they say things like "that a part of my culture". Are you serious! I'm a yound African-American male and thats not my culture! Thats not what my ancestors had in mind to pass along to their grandchildren. Young kids don't know that baggy pants came from the prison life. If a male wore his pants down showing his underwear then that meant that he belong to someone in the prison. Most young black males saw someone else wear their pants like that and then decided to do the same. I saw the same thing when young black males started wear shoes without shoe strings! They didn't know that if you went to jail that they make you take your shoe strings out ot your shoes! They thought that it was a fashion but it wasn't! Most of the guy didn't get their shoe strings back to their shoes! It shows a lack of eadership amongest our African-American males. Maybe that the reason that we occupy about 60 percent of the prisons!
ReplyDeleteI don't like to see a person pants hang down and show their underwear. This to me is a lack of respect for theirself and other people. I don't care if it's a man or woman it just shows that they are wanting attention good or bad and I guess I am sterotyping but that is my opinion. It to be a sign of society today just like long hair in the 60's and 70's.
ReplyDeleteBaggy pants are a NO in my opinion. Who wants to see someone walking around with there pants almost touching the ground. There are kids walking around that see stuff like this and they mimic it. It is not something I want my children to see. I believe now that they have the no sag law in the public school system, this will help to decrease the number of people sagging in the community. I feel that as a young male we are representation to younger males as to how they should present themselves. Presentation of your self for the first time leaves a lasting impression on everyone.
ReplyDeleteThank you Roland! Too, don't you think it also is just part of non-self-respect? I feel these young men have no respect for themselves or anyone else.
ReplyDeleteWell on think sagging is that bad we already controlling everything else around the kids lifestyle so if they wanna wear their clothes a certain way it's their choice it's a time and a place for everything so let kids be kids now when they are being disrespectful than chest tie them but for sagging nobody not even adult wear their pants on their waist according to wear your waist line is located right below your navel that too high now when they are sagging and their behind is showing now thats too low but too much of anything is abuse so thats when it's wrong and making this a law is crazy.
