Why College Athletes should get paid

It takes alot of sacrifice to become a big time college athlete. Alot of time and dedication is involved most of the time out of the athletes control. Athletes bring in millions of dollars to major division one schools each year. Yes, most of the athletes get there schooling paid for but when you compare a college athletes tuition to a college coaches salary a year, it does not balance out. There are coaches in basketball making 1.2 million dollars(http://www.wral.com/news/local/wral_investigates/story/5922675/), all at the sacrifice and hardwork of the players. the players are the ones who go out and win the games for the schools. Alot of times whether the the players feel good or are feeling sick, they are still expected to go out and perform at a high level. Coaches also get the benifit of having car packages, where they can drive a car until the miles run out and than get another one. what do the athletes get? Nothing. Also Some expectations are so great from coaches that they tend to lose focus on what the real purpose of college is. Some coaches really believe that players should be athletes first and than school falls after that, evan tho they want admit it. College sports is a business now ranging from a broad number of things. Some schools sell the players jerseys at bookstores and other sports stores. Most of the tome the players do not even know that their jersey is being sold until they see a fan with it on. The athletes should be giving something. People might say well they get school paid, but the price of schooling compared to the amount of time they have to put into their sport and the amount of money they bring in to a school they should get a cash reward or check. Another pont in this argument that coulds be made is the making of college sports video games. The makers of college sports video games tend to try to make the college teams as accurate as possible and the players as close to possible to the real players. They have to do that because if they did not no one would want to play the games. I think the athletes should get something for this because EA sports makes millions. A typical preaseason day for an athlete is workout at 6 am, thanjust enough time for breakfast and class. After class practice again, and for some athletes they evan have to go to class after that. That’s a rough schedule everyday having to balance that and school work. Most times a lot of work doesn’t get done because the athletescan only think about getting sleep before the next day. That’s a job.

  1. I agree with this post. In my opinion college athletics are ran like a business. Athletes have to be different places at certain times to do things other than play their sport. I feel that they should have some type of compensation other than their tuitions paid because of their rigorous schedule they are unable to work a job and have a steady income.

  2. I agree with this blog because college sports is a job as a matter of fact it is a career. I am just a student who works parttime during semesters. It's hard for me to find time to do homework, pay bills, or just some private time. I had to take off work today for a personal day because since school started I haven't been able to tend to business. I know atheletes have it 100 times more. I think that they should have their tuition paid and there should be a stipend which should be given out every month there is a game. Professional athletes are just athletes. College athletes are students, athletes, and in the prime of their lives and should also be able to have fun.

  3. I totally agree that college athletes should get paid a little salary and have a scholarship also. The scholarship isn’t enough to provide the athletes with the things they will need like gas money, food, and spending money for after the game. Some of these athletes come from out of state and their parents don’t have much to send to their kids.

  4. I totally agree with this post and what everyone has said but as a student athlete myself I do not think that athletes should get paid. Honestly I know that there are tons of kids out there who love the games we play just as much and even more than we do, we are lucky to have the oppurtunities that we have. As an athlete represtenting a division 1 school, I know that just going out and winning a game for my team and my school is enough. You should love the game so much and be greatful to be able to play where you do now, that money should not be an issue. And really, tution is a lot and you are getting a free education, you have all kinds of support staff to help you with homework and mentors to keep you organized. You have phenominal practice facilities and the best trainers and coaches, and thats not enough? For the coaches, this is their job, this is how they support their families and pay their bills, and when YOU'RE not winning on the floor THEY are losing too.

  5. I agree that there are many coaches that have their priorities mixed up for the players and i also feel that student athletes should get paid because we are having to pretty much work two full time jobs and we are limited to what ever scholarships are avalible. This is a problem that the campus is not going to adress though because the athletes here for the most part would not be able to do anything about it becuase many of us would not be able to leave and aford to go any where else if the school refused to pay us for our time and efforts.

  6. I totally disagree with this blog. Don't get me wrong I love sports, because I play d2 golf before transfering to Memphis, but come on. If they were to start paying College Athletes all of the schools who have the most money will get in a bidding war and these big money schools will make dynasties of the sports, and teams like the University of Memphis will have no chance to go to any championship games ever. Also the coaches get paid money because it is their careers. 98 percent of college athletes don't go pro. Well why don't we start paying the band members too because they dedicate their life to band. (Please, not going to happen)

  7. I'm in agreement with you. I think that college player make a lot of money for colleges in return for a lot less money for education. If a college person is seen with someone that might influence them to go pro then they are black balled and sometimes banned from the pro's. College students often time have little or no money to eat on! The education is free but they could be making millions in the pro's! I just think that it's unfair for colleges to make soo much money off of the players and they get very little in return! I think the incentive of money in college might make them stay a little long and get their education as oppose to going to the pro's early!

  8. College athletes already get incredible perks for playing on the team, moreso than other deserving students receive for attending any given school. Special diet plans catered individually to each student (often paid for); private dining, housing, workout facilities; exclusive programs focused around their studies, and often special treatment in classes; scholarships and grants to fully pay for class and living expenses; now they should be paid on top of all of that?

The purpose of school sports is to be extracurricular. I agree that too much money is paid to coaches for reaping the benefit of a student's talent, so address the situation there. If they make it to the pros, then fine, they can make their mega salary there (something else I twitch at the mention of, but won't address here).

There are any number of students who are working incredibly hard while at school. Just because they're not on a field or on a court doesn't mean they're just as stretched and busy and focused as any athlete. Some of these come from families that can't support them very much, too. And the student who is working 3 jobs to put himself through school is expected to be responsible with his school work and responsibilities just like the student who is there on daddy's gold card. With all respect to the athletes who are postin gon these forums, college athletes receive extraordinary preferential treatment as it is, and some of the money that goes to these programs (such as paying $1.2m to a coach) could be going to more scholarships for students, and to funding things like the sciences and arts. If a student wants to play college sports, then that is a responsibility to accept knowingly. It is a school first, and a team second.

  9. Right ON Trent,
I agree with you 100%. The athletes get too much special treatment as it is already, if some of the "regular" students did what some of athletes we would be failing....I work two jobs (full time and go to school, I don't see any teachers giving me extra time to do my homework, being allowed to miss classes or coming in late or leaving early without being in trouble.
